Coming Up in Library Classes: Student Led Book Centers

RES second graders love to share books and recommend them to their friends. Over the next few weeks, the second graders will have a chance to teach their classmates more about their own favorite books during student-led, hands-on "Book Centers." They will be planning their centers around interesting topics, authors or series they like, formats they enjoy, and other themes they may come up with. I can't wait to hear the conversations these scholars will be having with each other about what books they should read next!

Geography Games #resvt

Second graders are busy learning and studying the names and locations of the seven continents, four major oceans, North and South Poles and the equator. Classes went to the computer lab today to use an online game through Sheppards Software, to help students remember names and locations on a world map. The Day the Crayons Quit by Drew Daywalt

All school year, RES scholars have been sharing the 10 excellent picture books on the 2014-2015 Red Clover Award reading list. Every year the Vermont Center for the Book puts together a new reading list of 10 fiction and nonfiction picture books for this award, which is named after our state flower. Vermont students in kindergarten through fourth grade read, listen to, discuss, and write about the books on the list. Then each student votes for his or her favorite.

This year's Red Clover winner at RES, by a large margin, was The Day the Crayons Quit by Drew Daywalt. Scholars couldn't wait to reread their favorite parts of this story about a rebellious box of crayons who complain to their owner: "Try coloring inside the lines," "tell Yellow and Orange to stop arguing over which one is the color of the sun," or "pick a different favorite color, I'm worn down to a nub!" This funny book is an excellent example of character development, perspective and voice, and it kept our first and second graders laughing all winter. Other popular titles were Unicorn Thinks He's Pretty Great by Bob Shea, Papa's Mechanical Fish by Candace Fleming, and The Mighty Lalouche by Matthew Olshan (Mrs. Redford's favorite to read aloud with a bad French accent).

Once we have collected the last few Red Clover votes from RES, these votes will go to the Vermont Center for the Book. The VCB will add our votes together with votes from elementary schools all over Vermont. The top vote-getter from the whole state will be declared the Red Clover Award Winner for 2015. Snow Play Day! #resvt #cesuvt

Today all of Richmond Elementary earned snow play day for being respectful of themselves, being respectful of others, and being respectful of the environment. Students were able to celebrate with snow play day! The weather held off for students to go sledding, create snowmen and snow bunnies, create forts, and enjoy the spring weather! Way to go second graders!!

Vermont Writes Day! #resvt #cesuvt

On Thursday, second graders participated in Vermont Writes Day! This is an annual event where classrooms across Vermont respond to a given prompt for seven minutes. Our second graders responded to a picture prompt and were able to describe what was happening in the picture, create a story, or take the perspective of a person in the picture. Students did a fantastic job and wrote for longer than seven minutes!

Second Grade families are invited to a Potluck in the RES Cafeteria on Thursday, March 26th from 5:30 - 6:30. RES will provide plates and utensils.Please bring a dish to share!   This is an opportunity for families to get together in a casual atmosphere. We hope you can make it!
