Curriculum Updates for November #resvt

This was sent home last week in home/school folders. Here is a digital copy. :-)

Social Skills -  This has been a focus since day one in kindergarten.  We play games, role play situations, read books and discuss ways to solve problems, develop respectful behavior and build friendships.  Our school uses PBIS (Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports) to encourage and recognize positive behavior. We earn links, light light bulbs in the lobby and earn celebrations as a class and as a school to recognize positive and respectful behavior.
Reading- We use Units of Study by Lucy Calkins for both reading and writing.  In reading we use a workshop model. Teachers present a mini-lesson to students focusing on an aspect of reading each day.  For example, a mini lesson might focus on using the pictures to help figure out the words (“picture power”), or using “sound power” by looking at the letters and connecting the sounds to figure out the word.  The students read to self, read with a partner and/or read with the teacher. They might also read to a stuffed animal or retell a story. We find many fun ways for students to engage with books and learn to read and comprehend.

Writing- During writing time we often begin with a mini lesson about writing and then send students off to write.  Most of the time they choose what to write about. Students have been writing real stories from their lives with a beginning, middle and end.  Some students are writing sentences, some are writing words, some are writing letters and some are dictating to an adult. Kindergarten students have also learned to label pictures.  They write in other subject areas (science, math, etc.) as well as during writing time.

Math -In the beginning of the year our math focuses on counting, recognizing and writing numbers.  Students have been playing games, working alone and with partners to increase their math knowledge and skills.  We also have been measuring objects with cubes, popsicle sticks, etc. Kindergarteners are learning to check their work for accuracy and to make sure their work is clear and organized.  We are working a great deal with a ten frame (two rows of five rectangles). This helps us organize our counting, build numbers and find combinations that equal 10. Math work at this time of year also focuses on number relationships such as what is one more or one less than a certain number.

Science-  This trimester we have been working on an Organisms unit.  We observe, research and discuss to find out what animals and plants need to survive.  We look at the impact plants and animals, including humans, have on the earth. The third part of the unit focuses on how we can reduce the impact we have on the earth.  Throughout the year kindergarten students also observe weather and discuss how it affects us and the earth.

Please let us know if you have any questions.  Thank you.

RES Used Book Sale 2018
**Still have donations you’d like to share!
Bring them to RES!
Mark your calendars, and remember your quarters! :) Thanks!

Monday, November 26, 2018

Dear Families,

It’s that time of year again!  RES is holding its Annual Used Book Sale!  On Thursday, December 6th, children in grades PreK-4 will have the opportunity to come to the Art Room and purchase gently used children’s books for $.25 each!  It’s an exciting day at school, and it’s been a yearly treat to see the faces of the children as they gather new stories to read and share with their families!

We are still welcoming donations of gently used books (children’s picture books AND chapter books).  Please check in at the front office, and then bring your boxes and bags of books directly down to Maribeth Berliner’s classroom  - Room 35.  This sale is a great opportunity to clean out your collections before the holidays, and keep your books in the hands of our community’s children!

Money raised from this sale will be used to help support students within our RES learning community, and a portion of the money will be used to purchase some new gift books for the University of Vermont Pediatric Unit.

Thank you for your support with this project!

Best,

Maribeth Berliner, M.Ed.
Gr.4 Teacher, RES

RES Gym and Library
Cost: 2$ per project (to cover cost of disposable resources, scholarships available)

What is an Inventor’s Workshop?
This workshop is a family-friendly event to MAKE, create, learn, invent, craft, recycle, think, play and be inspired by celebrating arts, crafts, engineering, science and technology.  Students will work with their families to create! Activities will be facilitated by engineers and teachers, but tasks will be open ended and creative. Families will have an opportunity to learn together as they experience the fun of making / building / constructing / designing and more! A variety of activities will be available to challenge students from Grades preK – 8.
*RES PTO will be hosting a bake sale so bring some $$ to buy a treat (or 2!)

Activities planned for our workshop include:

Curriculum updates with resources! #resvt

Have you been wondering what your kindergartener has been up to while at school? Here is a list of what we have been working on during academic times. There are clickable links that will bring you to a resource I have either used with the students or a resource for families.

Math:

  • Students have been working with 2-D shapes. We have been identifying them around our environment, creating pictures, discussing what we observe, and having exploring! Shapes we have been focusing on are: circle, oval, square, rectangle, diamond(rhombus), triangle, trapezoid, hexagon.
  • Please use the following link to see Investigations Math family letter from unit 3. A paper copy will also be coming home in your child's home/school folder. Happy shape hunting!
  • Counting backward from 10-1 has been a skill that the class has been working hard on. Here is a video that we have watched to help students remember the number order.

Word Study:

  • We completed a review of the lower case letter and letter sounds we have learned up to this point. Students have made amazing progress-it is fascinating to see! Towards the end of the week we introduced the lower case letter formation for letters: p, j. Along with letter formation, students learned the sounds and picture clue that Fundations uses. A letter explaining more will come home on Friday in your child's home/school folder.
  • Snap words learned so far: I, the, see, can.
Reading:
  • Reader's have been working hard trying to point to each word on the page. We continue to mark our "WOW!" pages and reading with our partners.

Writing:

  • We continue to write true stories. Students will start to stretch words out and write all the sounds they hear to write labels or sentences. Keep pointing out to your scholar things they have done or happened to them that would make great writing topics!
Science:
  • We have been exploring animals in Vermont and how they change our environment. Scientists took an in depth look at squirrels and beavers. Coming up next students will examine pets and decide what animals need to survive; this will then extend to plants' needs.
  • The following are videos we have seen to show examples of how animals change their environment to meet their needs: Beaver Chew TreesRabbit DiggingSquirrel NestSquirrel DiggingWoodpecker
Movement Breaks:
  • We love to use a variety of movement breaks throughout our day. Some popular ones are simple games that encourage being silly or working together, Yoga 4 Classrooms (we love the star pose and power breath), or a dance party! We also use technology for some movement breaks such as GoNoodle or Cosmic Kids Yoga. All of us benefit from getting up and moving throughout our day.
