Thursday, February 5th, second grade scholars accepted the #studentlife challenge. The #studentlife challenge was for students to take photos of what their day looks like through their eyes. All of us had a blast sharing our day and comparing our day with the rest of the participants! Second graders are authors! Today students shared their informational books with their fifth grade buddies from Camels Hump Middle School. This was second grade's writing celebration, where we celebrated the hard work, perseverance, knowledge, and the completion of another published piece. Thank you to our fifth grade buddies who made a terrific audience!

Reading Detectives! #resvt #resreads

Have you ever wondered what it would feel like to wake up with stripes one day? Well in A Bad Case of the Stripes by David Shannon, Camilla Cream does just that! Our second grade scholars discussed character traits of Camilla Cream. They claimed she was: brave, scared, sad, and afraid. Students then found evidence from the book to support the character trait of their choice. We have some terrific reading detectives!

A Splash of Red: The Life and Art of Horace Pippin 

by Jen Bryant and Melissa Sweet

Second graders are enjoying this year's Red Clover books in the RES library. Named after Vermont's state flower, the Red Clover Award is Vermont's children's choice award for picture books. Every year, a group of teachers and librarians puts together a list of  10 fiction and nonfiction Red Clover books. Students who read or listen to at least five titles from the list get to vote on their favorite book. Their votes, along with votes from students all over the state, help choose the Red Clover Award winner.

Scholars are practicing their critical thinking skills while they are discussing these books in library classes. Our questions to focus on are: do I like or dislike this book, and why? What specific details in the text or illustrations make me think this book is interesting or boring, beautiful or ugly, serious or funny?

This week we read and discussed A Splash of Red: The Life and Art of Horace Pippin by Jen Bryant and Melissa Sweet. Hitting the Slopes! #resvt

Thanks to Mr. Godfrey, all second grade students were able to ski or snowboard at Cochran's on Wednesday! Students of all abilities did an incredible job turning, curving, and stopping! As many second graders said throughout the day, "this is awesome!!" Many thanks to Mr. Godfrey for his organization of the field trip, Cochran's Ski Area for hosting us, and the numerous volunteers who helped our day be so successful! Next time you're on the slopes, be on the look out for our second graders shredding the gnar!
