Park Day Update #resvt

Dear Families,

Due to tomorrow's inclement weather forecast, we will be canceling our picnic and park day. We will be setting up fun indoor stations instead. We'll be grouping the kids in their 3rd grade class configurations so that they'll have a chance to mingle with each other. Thanks to those of you who volunteered; we'll no longer need your assistance. If you were planning on sending in watermelon, popsicles, or face paint, please still do as we will be incorporating these into our fun stations. Students will still be able to receive the normal school lunch or bring lunch from home.

Aniaml Haikus #resvt

Second graders wrote haikus about animals. Haikus are a form of Japanese poetry where the first line has 5 syllables, second line has 7 syllables, and the last line has 5 more syllables. Here are what our class created!

Owl
Big eyes and fuzzy
Cute and feathery sharp beak

What Does Mr. Berry Do All Day?! #resvt #cesuvt

Second grade students wrote a classroom book describing what they believe our principal, Mr. Berry does all day long. This was a creative writing activity, and our second graders have  incredible imaginations! Activities ranged from Mr. Berry talking to aliens, playing sports with athletes, taking trips to different states, dancing, and much more! Watch the video to see Mr. Berry reading his book to the authors and to find out what he actually does all day!

Ruler Exploration #resvt #cesuvt

Our final math unit is on measurement and today scholars had the chance to observe and use rulers. We noticed rules go to 12 inches, they can be colorful, centimeters are smaller than inches, they are long, there are some lines without numbers underneath them and some have different textures. Scholars then had a chance to measure objects around the classroom!

I Spy Time! #resvt #cesuvt

During math on Monday, second graders went on a scavenger hunt spying different times! Students were partnered up and had to find twelve clocks that were scattered around the classroom and record the digital time. This correlates to our Investigations math program, where students have to tell time to the nearest fifteen minutes.

Sorting Solids #resvt

Second graders dug deeper into our science unit on matter on Thursday morning. The focus question for the experiments today was: "how can we describe how solids are similar/different using properties?" As a class, we did six mini experiments sorting solids by: weight, sink/float, stack/roll, magnetism, hardness, and bouncibility. Each scholar had a chance to test the solids and record their data either in a T-chart or continuum.

Pinching Paper Clips #resvt

In second grade math to support subtracting amounts from 100, students pinched paper clips. Paper clips come in boxes of 100, students pinched their paper clips then had to record how many they pinched, write an equation, then solve that equation to solve how many paper clips were remaining in the box. Students had fun using school supplies in a different way and are becoming fluent in subtraction!
