Partner Reading #resvt

On Monday, second graders reviewed what partner reading looks like and sounds like. Students learned a poem to help remember "elbow to elbow, knee to knee, book in the middle so both can see." Each student takes turn reading a page of the book. We also learned that partners can ask questions during reading such as: "what do you think will happen next?", "this reminds me of...", "what was your favorite part?". Reading is thinking!

Life on the Mayflower #resvt

This past week, second graders have been learning about what life was like for the Pilgrims on their Mayflower voyage. In connection with our social studies unit The Founding Families, students have been reading articles, creating diagrams of the Mayflower, learning new vocabulary words, and creating a map of the Mayflower voyage. We have learned that life on the Mayflower was not ideal; with horrible sleeping conditions, little food, and no bathroom! Our class tried to fit into a large square that represented how much space one family would have on the Mayflower. Needless to say, they were not comfortable!

Small Moments #resvt

Second graders are busy focusing on small moments in their first writing unit! Students will be writing and illustrating small moments from their lives. We gave the visual of a watermelon and a seed; the watermelon is an entire day, a whole vacation, the entire soccer game, or a day at school. The seed is the one ride you went on, the fire drill that happened, or the one goal scored. Students will be writing seed (small moment) stories for about six weeks then we will have a publishing party!

Elmer the elephant! #resvt #resreads

Today we read Elmer by David McKee. Elmer is an elephant who isn't normal elephant color. This story taught us about the importance of being unique and being ourselves! Students got a chance to color and paint their very own elephants for our Elmer day parade that will be on display for open house. Ask your child for more information about the story!

The butterfly hatched! #resvt

We were very excited this morning as we were greeted by our monarch butterfly! A student found a chrysalis and brought it in for us to observe, watch, and wait until it hatched! It was a great connection since scholars learned about the life cycle of a monarch butterfly while they were in first grade.

Marvelous Math Board! #resvt

Our Marvelous Math board is up and running! This is a space in our classroom where student work is displayed that exemplifies second grade math expectations. Students can use this board as a resource when they are completing their math work. The expectations for second graders is to have clear work, equations (when necessary), labels, and use their counting strategies. Every student will have work displayed on the Marvelous Math board at least once during the school year!
